Adding and Subtracting Integers Calculator

Enter your integer equation below:

This free online calculator shows the work for addition and subtraction of integers, and also when to change the sign for subtracting negative numbers. Add and subtract positive and negative integers, whole numbers, or decimal numbers. Use numbers, plus + and minus -. You can also group integer addition and subtraction in parentheses ( ) and the calculator will solve the equation using PEMDAS rules.

Input Examples

InputsAnswer
-10 - -22 + 3345
(-10) - (-22) + 3345
-10 - (-22 + 33)-21

Rules for Adding Integers

If signs are the same → Keep sign & Add numbers.
(-) + (-) = (-) | (+) + (+) = (+)
ExampleResult
-21 + -9-30
(+7) + (+13)+20
If signs are different → Subtract smaller from larger and keep sign of larger number.
ExampleResult
-13 + (+5)-8
-7 + (+9)+2

Rules for Subtracting Integers

Keep the sign of the first number. Change subtraction operations to addition operations. Change the sign of the numbers that follow to the opposite. Then follow the addition rules.

(-) - (-) → (+)
(-) - (+) → (-)
(+) - (-) → (+)
ExampleConversionResult
(-15) - (-7)= (-15) + (+7)-8
(-5) - (+6)= (-5) + (-6)-11
(+4) - (-3)= (+4) + (+3)+7

Order of Operations (PEMDAS)

PEMDAS stands for “Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction.” Always solve parentheses first, then exponents, then multiplication/division (from left to right), and finally addition/subtraction.

P → E → M/D → A/S (Left to Right)

More About Integers

Positive and negative integers represent direction and magnitude. Direction shows whether a number is above or below zero. Magnitude shows how far from zero it is. Together they describe real-world information like temperature, elevation, finances, and electrical charge.
