Average Velocity Calculator

Average Velocity Calculator

Result:

Formula

v̄ = (v + u) / 2

Choose what to find — average velocity (), initial velocity (u), or final velocity (v). Enter any two values and the calculator will solve for the third.

Average Velocity Equation

The average velocity () of an object is equal to its final velocity (v) plus initial velocity (u), divided by two.

v̄ = (v + u) / 2

Where:
• v̄ = Average velocity
• v = Final velocity
• u = Initial velocity

Velocity Calculations

  • Given v and u → calculate v̄ = (v + u)/2
  • Given v̄ and v → calculate u = 2v̄ − v
  • Given v̄ and u → calculate v = 2v̄ − u

Example Problem

During a 5k race, the velocities of runners are taken at the beginning and end of the 3rd mile. If Runner A is running at 10 mph initially and 7.5 mph finally, what is her average velocity?

Using the formula: v̄ = (10 + 7.5) / 2 = 8.75 mph

Scientific Notation

You can also use scientific notation, e.g., 3.45e9 for 3.45 × 10⁹. Just ensure there are no spaces between the number and the exponent indicator.
